Wells Fargo invests $500 million

Plus: Hot debate: Should the singles division be eliminated

#too big of a deal to fail

Hello, folks! This is Picklewho, and this may or may not be a pickleball news blog. We may or may not be living in a simulation. You may or may not be in a coma, and this is just your brain creating this moment. And I may or may not be writing this from my parents' basement.

Just let that sink in, and have a nice Friday. Here’s the news!

  • Wells Fargo invests $500 million pickleball too

  • The Red Rock Open is already here!

  • Hot debate: Should the singles division be eliminated?

Wells Fargo to put money on pickleball

Wells Fargo, aka the bank where my account balance is -$33 and I had no idea that was even legal, recently announced a $500 million investment in its northeast Charlotte campus. Such an investment will include a lot of boring upgrades and two beautiful pickleball courts.

Now, should you trust a bank that will build only two pickleball courts out of a $500 million investment? Albeit the answer is “Heck no, they better learn how to handle money in a way that contributes to society!”, that’s a question for another day.

The Red Rock Open is here!

Unlike the message I'm expecting from my ex-fiance, the PPA Red Rock Open just arrived! The tournament will feature both amateur and professional players, though sad news: no Ben Johns or Anna Leight Waters.

Still, we’re up for a big tournament. Lucy Kovalova, the #1 in Women’s Doubles player will compete and is expected to get some gold. Men’s #2 in the world Riley Newman and Women’s #2 Catherine Parenteau will also put on a heck of a show. So save those napkins, don’t get off this blog, and Carla…

Please text me back. What am I supposed to do with all this food?

Who am I kidding, there’s no left.

What’s wrong with the singles division?

When a professional pickleball player says an unpopular opinion about the sport, you better brace yourself, ‘cause it’s going to detonate the community harder than a nuclear missile.

(Figuratively speaking, please deactivate all nukes, thank you)

When that player is Lea Jansen, winner of the 2022 US Open Women’s doubles title, you know we’re up to something big. So, what did she say that was so controversial?

Jansen suggested getting rid of the singles division, that’s what she said! Before you turn on torches and go to Jansen’s location, hear her (or read her) out, because she made some very interesting points:

- It’s the least-watched event.

- It’s the worst paid.

- Produces the highest body damage.

Some people agreed and others went as far as saying that the mixed doubles division should be eliminated as well. At the moment, we remain Swiss-neutral, but what do you think?
