Plus: Discussion over pickleball proposal ends in verbal brawl

#I_quit_my_dayjob

Hello everybody! Welcome to PickleWho, the #1 pickleball blog on the internet. After a hard weekend, we can finally post this meme, grab a beer, and enjoy our Monday.... Unless, of course, you’re doing overtime. In that case 1) my deepest condolences, 2) you’re making more money than us, so beers on you if we meet.

Here’s the news!

  • PPA Atlanta Open had a massive upset

  • Discussion over pickleball proposal ends in verbal brawl

Big upset in PPA Atlanta!

The PPA Atlanta Open had some of the expected results: Anna Leigh Waters reached the semi finals with a superb performance and Connor Garnett got to the finals without breaking a sweat. Business as usual.

However, no one prepared me for one of the men's singles quarterfinals results. In a huge plot twist, Christian Alshon defeated the #1 player in the world, Ben Johns 11-5, 6-11, 11-7… Only to fall in the semifinals against JW Johnson.

Basically, Mario defeats Bowser in the first castle, only to die against Yoshi at the end of the game. That's the whole summary. Let's wait and see who wins the finals!

Is Frank Anthony Davis an engineer?!

… The answer is yes. Frank Anthony Davis is not only an APP champion, US Open medallist and…a South Jersey citizen? I’d say “poor guy”, but it turns out he’s also an engineer, so he’ll never be poor. Still, who needs an engineering degree when you’re this good at pickleball?

Even after an injury that took him off the courts in 2022, Davis kept his ranking as No. 11 in the world. He ended third in the US Open last month, and this year, he expects to earn over $75,000 from tournaments and sponsorships.

I guess he’d be the first person to say “if this engineering stuff doesn’t work, I always have pickleball”, and not the other way around.

Verbal fight in city council over pickleball

Arizona has more to it than a few missing tourists in the Grand Canyon. Now its citizens are into fights over our lovely sport. You see, onTuesday, Flagstaff’s City Council discussed the construction of eight new pickleball courts in Bushmaster Park and it escalated too damn fast.

Neighbors, politicians, and pickleball players alike engaged in a heated argument on whether the courts should be constructed, and when should players be allowed to play. Complaining about the noise is now a broken record.

The good news is that the heroes’ side prevailed at the end of the session and the project was approved. The even better news is that this discussion never took place in Texas. Otherwise, both sides would’ve changed shouting for shooting. Not my tea.
